Table runner – Appliqué using fusible web

It happens sometime. Christmas came and went and nothing happened in my home…i was sick and now I'm back in action.I was planning for this post before Christmas, but I couldn’t. Anyway better late than never, i thought of uploading this post.

Many of you have asked me how to work with fusible web. I learned it thru trial and errors.
Now I'll show you how i work with the fusible web.
Fusible web comes with a paper side and a webby side, in different weight. I’m using a light weight one, because i need to sew the appliqué to the background fabric.
We need to draw/trace the required appliqué patterns on the paper side of the fusible web.
trace on the paper side of fusible web
and iron the webby side to the wrong side of the appliqué  fabric…
iron it on to the wrong side of the applique fabric
I’m planning to make star appliquéd table runner. I need to make as many star appliqué using this paper and fabric. so it is fine just to keep the webby side of the fusible web on the wrong side of fabric and iron it and cut as much stars needed…
what if, if you want to make different appliqué from different fabric and you don’t want to waste the fusible web..
The thumb rule for using fusible web is, do not cut the fusible web before you fuse it to the fabric.
So that, cut out each appliqué pattern on the fusible web with a not less than quarter inch border …like this..
don't cut the fusible web before fusing it to the fabric
Now fuse this to fabric and cut out the appliqué pieces on the traced line.
Keep in mind, always fuse the fusible web on the wrong side of the fabric you choose to make appliqué…
Stars on the red background is the back side after fusing, and the green stars are the right side.

now, you need to tear out the paper from the back of the appliqué piece…like this
tear out the paper back to fuse it
Your appliqué pieces are ready to fuse on to the background fabric…
Position it on the right side of the background fabric and press it with medium hot iron.
If you need to reposition the appliqué piece after fusing, wait till it cool down, you can slowly peel of the appliqué piece and reposition it.
Do not peel it when the appliqué piece is just fused and it is hot…you will spoil both the appliqué piece and the back ground fabric.
Now you need to sew and fix the appliqué piece with a decorative stitch or a regular straight stitch..
sew the applique to the background fabric
Sew all the appliqué pieces on to the background fabric and finish it into a table runner using this easy tutorial.
Fusible web is a life saver when it comes to appliqué…
Until next time…
Wishing you all a Happy New Year…Nima

  3. Thanks for the tute. Gorgeous table runner. Do you use a steam or a dry iron to do the fusing?
